Henties Bay & Walvis Bay: The Namibia Skeleton Coast Calendar
A copper shark off the Skeleton Coast can run between 15kg and 190kg — and the region holds one of the largest bronze whaler populations on the planet, according to Travel Namibia's official angling guide. Henties Bay sits at the centre of it. This 2026 calendar tells you when each species fires, what permits cost, and how to layer for a coastline that throws fog, wind and tropical sun at you in the same hour.
When are the peak Skeleton Coast angling months in 2026?
Peak shore-angling season runs November through May, with the kabeljou (kob) run starting in the north in February and ending in the Sandwich Harbour breeding area in late April or early May. The Henties Bay Tourism office confirms galjoen come into their own from end of May through July when the sea is cooler.
The seasonal map:
- November–May: Copper shark/bronzy peak. Catch-and-release only.
- February–April: Kabeljou run. Big fish near the surf zone.
- May–July: Galjoen — best after three days of turbulent seas, on the spring tide.
- August: Henties Bay Fish Festival competition.
- November–December: Penguin Bonanza, Corporate Angling Challenge, Tri-Development International.
Namibia's National Shore Angling Championships run over three days in March for club-affiliated members.
What does a Namibia fishing permit actually cost in 2026?
A recreational permit costs N$168 per year or N$14 per month under the long-standing Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources regulations, available at Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Lüderitz and the Henties Bay Hanganeni Fishing Centre. A 2017 proposal to raise the monthly rate to N$1,500 caused public outcry; the Permanent Secretary subsequently clarified that anglers could buy a N$50 daily permit instead, according to the Namibian Sun.
Verify the latest gazetted rates with MFMR before you cross the border. Permit rules to remember:
- Daily bag limit: 10 fish across blacktail, galjoen, kob, West Coast steenbras combined.
- Minimum sizes: Blacktail 25cm, galjoen 30cm, kob 40cm, steenbras 40cm.
- All sharks must be released alive and unharmed under Namibia's national shark conservation plan.
What should you wear on the Skeleton Coast?
You need a wind-resistant shell, a UPF 50+ long-sleeve, a beanie, neck buff and polarised glass. The Skeleton Coast climate sits between cold Benguela water and the desert — and morning fog rolls in over 25°C-plus afternoons. Sun gloves matter when you cast from 6am to 6pm.
Pack like this:
- A wind-resistant shell for the morning fog and the seaward breeze.
- AquaTek long-sleeve as a UPF 50+ base layer.
- Beanie and neck buff for the cold mornings.
- Lightweight quick-dry pants for the warm afternoons.
- Sun gloves for line work and bait rigging.
- Polarised sunglasses to read gullies and the surf line.
Here's the catch: the Benguela cold-water current keeps the air cool but the UV is still high. Don't be fooled by the fog.
Plan your 2026 Skeleton Coast trip
Book Henties Bay accommodation early for November–December and the Easter holiday period — both fill out months ahead. Verify your permit and bag limits with MFMR before you travel. Then build a layered kit that handles the Skeleton Coast's bipolar weather. Kit out with Pelagic Gear SA wind-resistant shells, AquaTek long-sleeves, polarised sunglasses and sun gloves before you point the 4×4 north.
